The Unbearable Spitefulness of Beings

They might be assholes.

I take it that it is a safe stance to assume that all of us pay lip service to the idea of the world being shades of grey. What it implies is, naturally, it is naïveté to judge things as black and white. It is now considered as, I believe, elementary wisdom. But to actually put the principle to practice is at times rather gloomy. Because consequently this means that good people might be degenerates.

And lo. I know many decent people that are just that; backwardly racist, xenophobically hostile to outside customs and religions, agressively homophobic, chauvinistic to the bone, fond of reciting dated rethorics of their own upbringing’s supremacy, fond of divisive jokes retelling the worst of stereotypes, and not even slightly ashamed.

Indeed I was aware of the grim reality, but personally I never thought it was that bad until just very recently. So there I stood, pale as ghost as I cringed to awful racist jokes spewed by families and friends to spice up the Eid.

Selamat lebaran. Mari benahi diri.🙂

  1. They might be assholes.

as well as they might be decent kids. speaking of probability.

don’t forget that there are also people who are not racist nor xenophobic (and to sum up, not that decent as well). I guess this kind of people balances things up, but who knows what the meaning of ‘balance’ is supposed to be in this kind of world.

anyway. welcome to the real world, kid.

    My points exactly.

Welcome to the desert of the real.™

  3. Grey is not a color; it’s merely black and white in alternating pixels.😀

    *being Lawful Good*

Menurut saya sendiri, yang namanya area abu-abu itu memang ada, tapi itu bukan berarti semuanya lantas dianggap abu-abu. Some things can be virtually black-and-white; yang jadi perdebatan tinggal sejauh mana kita mau menarik garis perbatasannya dengan daerah abu-abu.

But I’m sure they’re good, warm, and kind people😉

  4. Come on, Ged, it’s not really that bad lah. Jokes are jokes, and they are mostly racist. I believe that the first joke invented was a racist one. Sudahlah.

Every cloud has a silver lining kan?

    *apa sih, gak nyambung*

Btw, have you read Kundera’s The Unberable Lightness of Being?

I agree with this too *add three reason for emergence of racism*.

  6. @ Catshade

Ya tapi kalau ada yang abu-abu, dan ada yang hitam-putih, secara keseluruhan ‘kan tetap abu-abu.😛

    *jadi ngomongin warna*

But I’m sure they’re good, warm, and kind people😉

    Iya. Makanya saya agak bingung.

    @ Nenda Fadhilah

    Lontong, tentunya.

    @ gentole

Ah, tapi saya tetap kecewa.😀 Joke kuno mungkin masih sering menyenggol sektor rasisme, tapi dengan zeitgeist zaman sekarang kayaknya ya kesannya betul-betul ga sensitif. Dan itu ga semuanya joke, lho. Ada yang bener-bener deklarasi “Race A sucks balls”.

Belum. Saya lagi baca dongeng-dongeng anak-anak. Aesop, Grimms, sampai E. B. White.😳

Better be it. I hate kids…👿

naturally, it is naïveté to judge things as black and white.

Hey, did you always found ‘black’ contamination on every ‘white’ & vice versa or something?

awful racist jokes spewed by families and friends

So all the description on 2nd paragraph is about your families and friends?!?😯

    Well, our world is… grey😆

  8. I believe that the first joke invented was a racist one
    .
Jokes bisa juga tidak rasis. Masih ada banyak sekali hal-hal lainnya yang bisa menjadi bahannya.
    .
Kalau cuma bisa mengandalkan rasisme, menurut saya pembuat joke bersangkutan berarti kurang kreatif🙂

    .
No, not yet. Nowhere nearly enough of them. Still need loads of these people around.
    .
So yeah, it’s your (and our) job to make more of these.
