They might be assholes.
I take it that it is a safe stance to assume that all of us pay lip service to the idea of the world being shades of grey. What it implies is, naturally, it is naïveté to judge things as black and white. It is now considered as, I believe, elementary wisdom. But to actually put the principle to practice is at times rather gloomy. Because consequently this means that good people might be degenerates.
And lo. I know many decent people that are just that; backwardly racist, xenophobically hostile to outside customs and religions, agressively homophobic, chauvinistic to the bone, fond of reciting dated rethorics of their own upbringing’s supremacy, fond of divisive jokes retelling the worst of stereotypes, and not even slightly ashamed.
Indeed I was aware of the grim reality, but personally I never thought it was that bad until just very recently. So there I stood, pale as ghost as I cringed to awful racist jokes spewed by families and friends to spice up the Eid.
Selamat lebaran. Mari benahi diri. 🙂
